Explore the Open Source KLMS Data Management Platform

The Knowledge Lake Management System (KLMS), a platform aimed at the agriculture sector, is now available online for anyone to explore and test through the project’s dedicated link. KLMS is a standout result of the STELAR project, which concludes on 31 August 2025. This open source data management platform adheres to FAIR principles and supports AI ready workflows, making it suitable for researchers, SMEs, and public bodies working with agrifood data.

On Wednesday, 23 July at 1 PM CET, STELAR held its final event, where participants experienced a live walkthrough and demonstration of the KLMS platform, marking a significant milestone in the project’s journey.

Introducing the STELAR KLMS Platform

The STELAR KLMS platform sits at the heart of the project’s open source approach to agricultural data. It provides a user-friendly, FAIR-compliant environment for data collection, governance, and processing, integrating data storage (via MinIO), metadata catalogues, a knowledge graph, and workflow orchestration tools.

Built to be modular and interoperable, KLMS supports the creation of AI-ready datasets and effective collaboration across institutions and use cases.

To further support data analysis and insight generation, STELAR also developed a complementary toolkit of domain-specific and domain-agnostic modules, including crop classification, food safety forecasting, and LLM-based data profiling.

Live Demo Held at STELAR Final Event

The one-hour final event, titled STELAR KLMS: Outcomes & Outlook, began with an overview of the project by the Project Coordinator Dimitris Skoutas (Athena Research Centre) who also introduced STELAR goals and pilots. This was followed by an introduction to KLMS from Vasilis Samoladas and a live demonstration by Dimitrios Petrou, both from Athena Research Center. The event can be watched here.

Representatives from pilot partnering organisations, Babis Thanopoulos (Agroknow)Solveig Blöcher (VISTA), and Simone Parisi (ABACO), shared testimonials on their experience of using the KLMS platform. The event concluded with a Q&A session moderated by Julia Mitrovic from Foodscale Hub. These presentations highlighted STELAR’s final phase and prepared audience members for the upcoming project closure at the end of August 2025.

STELAR Enters Final Phase

As the STELAR project approaches its conclusion, the event served as a final opportunity to highlight the outcomes, tools, and ongoing impact of the initiative. With the KLMS platform and the broader STELAR Toolkit now publicly accessible, their legacy is set to continue beyond the project’s official end.

You are invited to test the open source data management platform – follow the link to access KLMS and explore its features first-hand. Whether you are a researcher, an SME, or a public-sector user, KLMS offers a user-friendly data management experience built to support FAIR and AI-ready datasets.

Collaboration Across Europe

The STELAR consortium, co-funded by the European Union, is made up from 9 partner organisations from 5 countries. Apart from Athena Research Center, Agroknow, VISTA, ABACO and Foodscale Hub, the consortium consists of Eindhoven University of Technology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University of the Bundeswehr Munich, and RapidMiner.

Foodscale Hub lead the project’s Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication activities, while also supporting pilot preparation, KPI development, and ecosystem synergies to ensure sustainability of results.
